The Internet is evolving. So what is next?

In September 2004, the Pew Internet and American Life Project (PIP) discovered that the world of Blogging is taking over. PIP also revealed that religious organizations will feel the least amount of impact from blogging.

So, what is PIP? PIP is a project that researched the history of the internet, studied current day internet, and predicted the future of the internet. The researchers of PIP took the time to write a lengthy report to describe their findings and predictions for the rest of the world. So what else did PIP discover and report?

PIP, as mentioned earlier, is a lengthy report that describes what the future of the Internet will be like. It finds that it will be an integral part of every day life that it will become an invitation to attacks on the infrastructure of the Internet. What does this mean? That people will need the internet so much, that others will attack it using various methods including viruses. URLs will have (and already do) viruses that will attack your computer system.

Sixty-six percent of the people surveyed for PIP (1,286 people in total) agreed with a prediction. What was that prediction? That there would be at least one major attack on the infrastructure of the Internet or on the power grid of the United States within the next ten years. Eleven percent of the surveyed people disagreed with the statement. They do not believe that this type of thing will happen. Seven percent of the surveyed people challenged the statement as they do not think that an attack would be serious enough to cause power outages of any significant length or cause any deaths.

The Internet will be mixed more with our physical life and high-speed Internet connections will flourish. The majority of the people surveyed agreed with this statement. The number of high-speed internet connections will increase.

The state of the Internet has the people surveyed in awe and frustrated. Why? They love the search technology, blogs, and peer-to-peer networks. They have evolved the internet into an engaging, enticing enigma. They are frustrated with organizations that refuse to or are slow to change. Life is constantly changing. Therefore, it is common sense to change the infrastructure of organizations and expand to the internet to "get with the times."

These experts also wrote their own commentary on their surveys. They all added to a growing database about the trends of the internet and who the trendsetters will continue to be. This database holds the expectations of these experts and what the impact will be on the Internet and its users.

The group that will have the largest impact with the ever-changing Internet will be the newsgroups and publishing sector. Education will have a large impact, believe the experts, however not as large as the publishing sector. Surprisingly, music and its producers will not have as large of an impact, though they are sitting about middle in the end results.
