InMotion Hosting uses high-end Dell™ servers for all of their shared, VPS hosting and dedicated server packages. This means their hardware is tested multiple times before it goes live and helps eliminates the risk of a failure when it goes into production. They also configure their VPS servers with a RAID5 disk array, meaning that if one of the HHDs fails there won’t be any data lost. They also provide data backups every 48 hours on accounts less than 10GB for free. This is in addition to any backups the customer does on their own, which is very easy to do with cPanel and WebHostManager (WHM).
InMotion Hosting’s support is what we would call semi-managed support. They won’t do everything for you but they will help with a lot of issues that other VPS hosts wouldn’t touch. If you have to restore your account from a backup they’ll do it for you for free once every four months. They’ll also recompile Apache for free once every four months as well. Most other VPS providers also do not provide phone support which InMotion Hosting does. Their support reps can be contacted 24 hours a day either through chat, a toll-free phone number or through email.
One of the biggest pluses about InMotion Hosting’s VPS plans is that they provide you with a choice of data center locations. They have a data center in Los Angeles, CA for West Coast customers and one near Washington D.C. for East Coast customers. This can significantly cut down on the time it takes to send/receive emails and access your website. They also utilize 5 Tier1 bandwidth providers and BGP4 routing which means they can switch between providers if one of them has a network issue. In addition, they utilize peered connections with most of the major ISPs. This means that most hops between a customer's ISP and the InMotion datacenter are eliminated.
cPanel and WHM are included with every InMotion VPS hosting package. Most providers don’t include a control panel with their VPS plans or charge upwards of $40 a month for one. The fact that it’s included and pre-installed with InMotion means it takes very little time to get your websites up and running. Their VPS plans also include “Burstable RAM” which means that even though your account has a dedicated amount of RAM, if your account were to spike in RAM usage you wouldn’t be shut down. They also include SSH access standard and offer optional root access so you can work from command line if you prefer. One thing that they don’t offer is a choice of OSes so InMotion may not be the right fit for some developers.
When you compare prices based on the amount of RAM, some hosts may list a lower price. Keep in mind though that the fact cPanel is included with InMotion means you save around $20-$40 per month. Also, when you compare hard drive space, InMotion Hosting is a bit more generous with the storage space than other VPS hosts. Overall we feel InMotion provides a great value when you compare the features and support that is included and highly recommend them for anyone looking for VPS hosting.
